Chelsea’s Bitter Exit at the Hands of Barca

In Sports on May 7, 2009 at 12:18

It should have been the exact opposite.  After Michael Essien’s ferocious volley after 10 minutes that was reminiscent of Zidane’s in 2002’s Champions League final against Bayern Leverkusen, Chelsea dominanted both the speed and the tempo of the game, and even when barca seemed to be getting back into the game, Chelsea always did enough to choke them out.  But on the 93rd minute, Andreas Iniesta drew the game level for Barca and once again, Chelsea were left to rue their missed chances and contemplate defeat.

One has to feel sorry for Chelsea, considering they have come so close in the past 5 years to Champions League glory.  Last year, they lost to Manchester United on penalties after reaching the finals for the first time in their history.  Last night’s defeat hit home hard, especially for the likes of Michael Ballack, who, in his advancing years may have lost his opportunity at Champions League glory.

Having said that, the final is sure to be a great spectacle; to be honest, it would have been quite dull and repetitive if Chelsea had gone through to face United.  With Barcelona, we are sure to see a display of attacking football from both teams that will please football fans all over.  That is never guaranteed with Chelsea physical approach to game.  Bitter/Sweet ending I guess.  I may feel sorry for Chelsea, but I know I’m definitely going to enjoy the finals.

  1. I think Ballack will be on a team that is good enough to claim champions league glory one day even though he is an older player… He still is very serviceable player

  2. Sure. anything’s possible, but he is an older player, he’s not as quick as he used to be, and like all older players, they soon outlive their usefulness. Still, I hope he does get a chance to win the champions league, but time’s running out and it may already be too late.

  3. Barcelona deserve their place in the finals. I’m looking forward to it.
